Barcelona
- Transport - Trains
International
Trains come into Barcelona from Paris, Montpellier, Grenoble, Geneva,
Zurich, and Milan. Journey time from Paris is seven hours. The trains
pull into three Barcelona terminals: Estació de Sants, Estació
de França, which is near the port, and Passieg de Gràcia.
For domestic
train travel Spain has a comprehensive train network which is run
by the Spanish National Railway Network (Red Nacional de Ferrocarriles
Españoles) - RENFE. Long distance travel can be done either
with the night express trains or with the daytime high speed trains
AVE. Intercity trains are express trains, that do not stop in every
village, and cover middle distance daytime routes. They have video,
telephones, restaurants and newspapers.
To travel on
any trains except regional and suburban trains you need to make
a reservation. If you are making a round trip by train it is significantly
cheaper to book your trip with set outward and return dates; for
same day return there is a discount of 20%, and returning on a different
day will give you a 10% discount. Discounts are available to travellers
under 25 years and to pensioners.
In addition
to RENFE, the Catalan government's FGC (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat
de Catalunya) trains serve the regions surrounding Barcelona.
