News and Media in Barcelona
English Language Newspapers
The International Herald Tribune is published by the publishers of the New York Times and the Washington Post, and includes articles from each of these papers as well as its own articles. You can pick one up at some newsstands, particularly along “Las Ramblas” and in more international neighborhoods such as “Sarrià”.
The Wall Street Journal Europe and the Financial Times are also available at major newsstands. USA Today is available at major newsstands. The New York Times, Washington Post, and other major American papers are not usually available.
Barcelona Metropolitan is a local English-language monthly magazine. It has interesting articles about living in Barcelona as well as advertisements for goods and services geared towards foreigners. It is free, and can be found near the beginning of the month at various locations around town that attract foreigners, such as language schools, international schools, certain theaters which show movies in English, major hotels, etc.
Several British, French, German and other international dailies and weeklies are available in “Plaça de Catalunya” and along “Las Ramblas”.
Spanish Language Newspapers
There is nothing like reading the newspaper to get an idea about the people and city you are now living among. The biggest dailies in Catalunya are La Vanguardia, and El Periódico.
There are also a small free daily newspapers for distribution in the metro. It is written in both Catalan and Spanish in the same paper. Watch for them being handed out during the morning rush hours at major metro and FGC rail stations.
La Guía del Ocio is a small booklet that is published once a week and has lots of information about what’s going on in the city that week. It lists museum exhibitions, movie times, theater and music hall shows, restaurants, and more.
