Barcelona
- Shopping
The
wide and ample range of shops, from tiny traditional to open-air
markets and modern day malls, makes of Barcelona a Shopping City
of international standing: whether you're looking for the traditional
ceramics or the latest in fashion and design, Barcelona has it all.
Its large pedestrian
areas are perfect for a quiet stroll and wandering around the traditional
establishments, which date back hundreds of years and are housed
in beautiful buildings in the Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic), or browsing
the shops in the recently built shopping arcades, is, without a
doubt, an unforgettable experience.
We suggest you
a walk down the Shopping
Line, a 5- kilometre shopping route which links up the city's
different shopping areas, and enables people to get from one to
another on foot: it runs from Port Vell to the new business and
shopping district of the Diagonal, crossing La Rambla, the historical
centre, Barri Gòtic, Plaça de Catalunya up to Passeig de
Gràcia in the Eixample distrct.
Along this route,
and in other parts of Barcelona, you will find shops displaying
the "Barcelona Shopping Line" sticker. These shops, which
are part of the history of the city, are characterised by a wide
range of products and are synonymous with quality, due to their
service and the way they attend to customers.
Very useful
is to use the buses on the special Bus Shopping Line service, which
operate along the Shopping Line from Plaça de Catalunya to
Plaça Pius XII (Diagonal) and back again every 7 minutes (Monday
to Friday from 7:30am to 9:30pm and Saturday from 9:30am to 9:30pm).
Almost all shops
are open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 2pm and then from 5pm to
8pm, although some shops do not close for lunch, and others (mainly
in the centre) do not close on Saturday afternoon. The exceptions
to these hours are the major shopping malls, department stores and
supermarkets that stay open from 10am to 9pm and sometimes 10pm.
In the high season, shops are generally open until well after 10
at night.
Credit cards
are mostly accepted in large department stores, but not in the markets.
Note that if youre paying by credit card, you usually have
to show your passport or your driving licence.
