Barcelona is known throughout the world as a cultural city, and
its museums house a very valuable heritage and a permanent and exciting
range of activities. Over 40 museums: monographic art collections
such as the Museu Picasso, the Fundació Joan Miró
and the Fundació Antoni Tàpies which hold permanent
exhibitions of works, as well as the world's finest collection of
Romanesque art at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, temporary
exhibitions of contemporary art at the MACBA, the Museu d'Art Contemporani
de Barcelona, and numerous art galleries.
In addition
to displaying their own collections and hosting a wide range of
temporary exhibitions, the primary function of Barcelona's museum
is the conservation and popularising of that heritage, encouraging
different sections of the public to get to know it by means of exhibitions
and hands-on activities such as itineraries and evening visits,
workshops for schools, courses and cycles of lectures and live music
are coming more and more to configure the idea of the museum as
a driving force of the city's cultural dynamic.
